Calafate also known as the “ National Glaciers capital”, is located to 320 km. from Río Gallegos city, Santa Cruz province capital, situated on Calafate mountain foot and on the south shore of Argentino Lake, 185 meters above sea level.
The climate in El Calafate is dry and the average temperature during summer of 19º C and during winter of -2º degrees centigrade. The duration of the day varies; in summer since 5:30 to 23:00 hrs. and in winter it has 8 hours of light.
Calafate is important due the proximity to Los Glaciares National Park, also the main office of the Park is located in Calafate city.
Due the presence of the big Argentinean lakes and Viedma as its strategically location, Calafate city is the center of all the activities in the region inside as well as outside of the National Park, El Chaltén and the Torres del Paine National Park in the Chile south inclusive.
