Buenos Aires Botanical Garden

The Botanical garden of Buenos Aires is located in Palermo neighborhood besides de Zoo, in an 8 blocks perimeter, limited by Santa Fe Avenue, República Árabe Siria, Las Heras Avenue and Italia Square.

It was inaugurated in 1898. It was designed by the French landscape architect Carlos Thays, author of the design of many of the most important green areas of Buenos Aires like: 3 de Febrero Park and San Martin Square.
The Botanical garden covers a more than 7 hectares surface and house 6.000 vegetal species approximately, it has a Botanical library, three French style gardens, a herbarium, five greenhouses, 31 sculptures and an English style stately home.

Among the most impressive species by its age you will find native Argentinean species like:  tipas, cedars salteños, ibirá-puitás, chichitas, quebrachos colorados, carnavales and aguaribayes. Among the foreign species: sequoias, magnolias, oaks, Banana trees and ginkgos. 

What to visit at the Botanical Garden

- The Roman Garden: You will find the same vegetal species that the Roman botanical garden of the first century of our era used to have like: cypress, poplar and Bay leaf.

- The French Garden: With symmetrical French style of XVII to XVIII centuries.

- The Oriental Garden: In this area you will appreciate Ginkgo biloba; species from Oceanía, with Acacias, Eucalyptus and Casuarinas; from Europe, with oak, hazelnut trees, and elms; and from Africa, with bracken, palm trees, and rubber plants. It also, has from United States: sequoias, but overall Argentinean flora.

- Sculptures: The place has 33 art works amount sculptures, busts and monuments. The most important are: Los primeros Fríos, by Miguel Blay and Fábregas; Sagunto, by Querol and Subirats; Figura de mujer, by Lola Mora; Saturnalia, in painted bronze, by Ernesto Biondi.

- Greenhouses: The Botanical garden has 5 greenhouses, the major green house is art nouveau style, is 35 meters long and 8 meters wide, by its design is considered unique in its kind in the world.

- The Botanical Library: it has 1.000 books and 10.000 publications from all over the world; the information is available for the visitors.

How to get to the Botanical Garden

- Buses: 12, 15, 21, 29, 36, 37, 39, 41, 55, 57, 59, 60, 64, 67, 68, 93, 95, 111, 118, 128, 141, 152, 160.
- Subway: Line D, Italia square station.

- The main entrance is located in Santa Fé Avenue No. 3951 and the Botanical Garden open at 08:00 a.m. till 18:00 p.m. every day.
