De Mayo Avenue
De Mayo Avenue, is located in Monserrat porteño neighborhood, it was the first Buenos Aires Boulevard, and the spine of the city historic and civic center.
It born magnificent and with the time became the symbol of the Spanish-Argentinean relationships, and in the social manifestations scenery. It was the first avenue of the republic in all South America.
The avenue starts in Bolívar Street and runs from east to west between Hipólito Yrigoyen and Rivadavia Avenues. It connects the historic De Mayo square with Del Congreso square. Its extension is 10 blocks.
De Mayo Avenue is the civic exe of Buenos Aires city full of history. It was the first avenue of the city which transformed the “Big town” into a modern city proud of its European roots. By its kilometer and a half happened the most important historic facts of Argentina.
Cafés
In the avenue appeared many Spanish style cafés that even prepare the classic chocolate with churros. Many artists, writers, politicians and intellectuals found in De Mayo Avenue cafés its refugee.
The most representative, distinguish and antique café in Buenos Aires is still working: Café Tortoni, inaugurated in 1858 and functioning since 1880 in the current place, even though the entrance was placed on Rivadavia Street. In 1898 the main entrance to the café was changed to Nº 825-833 if De Mayo Avenue. The façade was design by the architect Alejandro Christophersen. It was the first bar to place chairs and tables in the sidewalks of the city.

- London City Coffee shop: “El London” was inaugurated in 1954, since its opening is visited by politicians, artists, and employees of downtown offices. In its tables, the Argentinean writer Julio Cortázar wrote its novel, Los premios, that in its first page says: “It was in the London of Perú and Avenida”.

- Urquiza Anchorena Palace: A passage of the building connects De Mayo Avenue with Rivadavia. It was built by the engineer Sanguinetti in 192l.
