National Grape Harvest Festival, Argentina
The Grape Harvest is the most popular festival of Mendoza. It is a symbol, the biggest celebration of Mendoza. It represents the finished work (the grape harvest).
The wine’s origin is linked to the spiritual work, since the evangelists used wine for celebrating the mass.
The national festival mobilizes the residents. Thousands of “mendocinos” and also tourists participate in all sorts of events as: dances (referred to wine), sports, art, theater, religion, typical food, carriages and fireworks; all those activities endure three months (from January to March).
The main activities are:
“La Bendición de los Frutos” (The Fruits Blessing) is the most expected spectacle. Before it, the great carriages parade pass through the streets of "Vía Blanca de las Reinas"; over 200.000 people participate in this event carried out at night. It is one of the main public demonstrations. Each department has its own allegoric carriage with its miss, as well as people hanging grape bunches, wine bottles and other symbolic objects of regional production.
"Carousel"
The carriages return to the city along with the crowds of bands, “gauchos” on horseback, carts, folk dances and communities’ carriages as Bolivian and Spanish ones.
“Acto Central” Main Act
It is the best moment of the festival. The Grape Harvest Miss is elected inside the Frank Romero Day amphitheatre. More than 40.000 spectators enjoy one of the biggest festivals in Mendoza. It reflects the wine history of Mendoza through stories of weather inclemency as hail storms. The Mendocino’s dances, gigantic grapes, exotic and traditional costumes show the harvest, the winemaking process and all the activities related to the grape.
