The Grande island of Tierra de Fuego is a region of contrasts in its valleys and mountain ranges.
Inhabited since ever by onas and yaganes indians; it was only sporadically explored by the europeans during three centuries. The two main cities were inhabited by religious missions: the Anglican religion by pastor Thomas Bridge, which found the city of Ushuaia in 1870, and the Salesian religion by Jose Fragnamo, which found the city of Rio Grande in 1893.
The climate in the winter time is extremely cold with intense snowfalls. It is therefore convenient to visit in summer time. The region has an annual average temperature of 6oC., with the minimuns in winter as low as -5oc., and maximuns is summer of 29oC.; besides, the rainfall is abundant and with the water coming from thawings.
To its traditional occupation of sheep raising and oil, it added the exploitation of its fishing resources and an accelerated process of industralization.
