San Nicolás Neigborhood, El Centro, City of Buenos Aires, Argentina

San Nicolás neighborhood, known as “the Centre”, is a place where the business and financial district (La City) are located, as well as the courts, the famous Corrientes Avenue (the street that never sleep), the Obelisk (located in the center), famous theaters, pizzerias, bookstores and coffee shops.

LIMITS

It is delimited by the following avenues: Cordoba, Callao, Rivadavia, La Rábida Norte and Eduardo Madero.

What to visit?

The Obelisk
It is located between Corrientes and 9 de Julio Avenues

It is a Buenos Aires symbol and a Historic National Heritage. It was designed by the architect Alberto Prebish and it was inaugurated in 1936 in order to commemorate the 400 years of foundation of the country.
This singular monument is 67 meters high. Inside it, there are stairs that lead to the top where you will be able to enjoy the panoramic view of the city.
The Obelisk is located in “Plaza de la República”.

9 de Julio Avenue
It is located between C. Pellegrini and Cerrito Avenues

It is an important Buenos Aires highway. It is claimed that it is the widest avenue in the world. It is 140 meters wide and 25 blocks long.
The avenue’s name honors to the Argentina’s Independence Day: July 9, 1816.

Corrientes Avenue

It is famous thanks to its theaters, cinemas, bookstores and coffee shops. This is the most traditional and popular avenue of Buenos Aires; it is considered an axe of nightlife and bohemian people.
Its name honors to the Corrientes Argentinean province due to it was the first province in joining to the Independence of Argentina.

General San Martín Cultural Center
It is located on Corrientes Avenue Nº 1500

It is a 13-storey building with 4 sub soils and 3 sections. It was the work of the architect Mario Roberto Álvarez; it was inaugurated in 1960.
It is the head quarter of the “Manuel de Falla” Municipal Music Observatory, the “Dirección General Municipal de Turismo” (Tourism Municipal Office), the LS1 Ciudad de Buenos Aires Radio and the Modern Art Museum. It also presents 5 giant screens where there are film seasons whose tickets are accessible.

Lavalle Square
It is located between Lavalle and Talcahuano, in front of the Court
It is located among Libertad, Lavalle, Talcahuano and Córdoba Avenues. It is formed by three historical blocks. In the square, you will appreciate a variety of old trees, the monument of General Juan Lavalle (father of the Argentinean independence), and several sculptures in honor to actors, musicians and politicians.

Cervantes Teather
It is located between Córdoba Avenue and Libertad
It was inaugurated on September 5, 1921. It was, actually, a Maria Guerrero`s dream that came true; she was a Spanish actress whose husband was Fernando Diaz de Mendoza. The façade of the structure shows the Alcalá University’s Rector and different Spanish objects. The museum and the library are opened to general public.

Colón Teather
It is located among Tucumán, Cerrito, Viamonte and Libertad Streets

It is a worldwide famous theater with perfect acoustic. It is considered the most important lyric theater in South America and it was inaugurated on April 27, 1857.
It has a neo renaissance Italian style. It is 43 meters high and it can hold up more than 3.000 spectators. Over 2.000 people work inside it. It possesses its own ballet corps (Ballet Company), as well as stable cast, workshops, dancing and performances, and a lyric art museum. Nowadays, there are opera, ballet and classic music performances.

Massué Viewpoint Tower
It is located between Talcahuano and Tucumán
It is located in front of the Lavalle square, in a touristy zone. It is an Alfred Massué´s work, a French architect. It was built in 1919, then, it was partially demolished and rebuilt in 1989. It preserves the antique corner and the tower with a viewpoint and nouveau style. It forms part of a modern construction.

Conventillo de las Artes
It is located in Libertad Nº 543
It was originally built for lawyer offices and then, it became an artists and paintings refuge.

HISTORIC AND NUMISMATIC MUSEUM OF “Banco de la Nación Argentina”
It is located in Bartolomé Mitre Nº 326
It was declared a Historical Monument. It is located in the Central House of the “Banco de la Nación Argentina”.

Jorge Luis Borges´HOUSE
It is located in Tucumán Nº 844

This is a quaint house where the famous writer, Jose Luis Borges, lived. He was one of the most recognized artists of Latin American and the universal literature. The house is open to general public and the entering is free.
