Barrio Norte, City of Buenos Aires, Argentina

“Barrio Norte” is a zone of Buenos Aires; it covers an important part of Recoleta, Palermo and Retiro neighborhoods. Its name comes from its ancient location (to the north of downtown).
The zone is located between Del Libertador, Puerreydón, Viamonte and Suipacha Avenues.
It is popular because of its different building styles, its small palaces and big mansions. The zone presents architecture very similar to Paris. Its main characteristics are opulence and the cultural life.
Nowadays, it is one of the liveliest zones of the city and you will be able to find there: gastronomy, bars, tea houses, coffee shops, ice cream commerce, and so on.
Barrio Norte is located few minutes from the “porteño” center. It is a strategic zone from where, you can move around the city thanks to the variety of transportation means.

What to visit?

Alzaga Unzué Mansion
It is located in Cerrito Nº 1455
This elegant property was built in 1919 by the architect Roberto Prentice; it was a requirement of Alzaga Unzue.
The façade of this monumental construction, called “La Mansión”, is similar to the French castles of the Loira region, it combines brick with stone, marble and gold plated tap.

Carlos Pellegrini Small Square
It is located among Arroyo, Libertad and Alvear Avenues
This is a restricted and triangular place which is located in the limit between La Recoleta and El Retiro neighborhoods. It includes three majestic mansions: the France embassy, the famous Jockey Club and the Brazil embassy; the picturesque streets of Arroyo and Libertad and the Altear Avenue formed the blocks of the location. On the last avenue, it is possible to appreciate the Apostolic Nunciature where the Saint Father Juan Pablo II was installed when he visited Argentina.

The France Embassy
It is located in Cerrito Nº 1390
This splendid construction was built in 1913, for Ortiz Basualdo, by the French architect Pablo Meter. It possesses four stores with neo-boric style, similar to the Parisian palaces. At the present time, it is the head office of France in Argentina.

Jockey Club Palace
It is located on Alvear Avenue Nº 1345
It is an elegant palace that belongs to Concepción Unzué de Casares. Nowadays, it is head office of the Jockey Club, a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1882 by Carlos Pellegrino. It has an interesting library and many works of art.

Santa Fe Avenue

It is one the most traditional avenues and it is a main artery of Palermo and Recoleta neighborhoods. In here, it is possible to appreciate elegant boutiques, fashion clothing stores, coffee shops, cinemas and other recreation centers.

Callao Avenue

This elegant avenue is the perfect place for shopping. It crosses the Santa Fé Avenue; in the surroundings, you can visit the streets of Rodriguez Peña, Montevideo, Arenales and Juncal whose fine architecture and fashion centers are important tourist points.

Rodríguez Peña Square
It is located among Callao, Rodríguez Peña, Paraguay u M.T. de Alvear Avenues

The name of the square belongs to Nicolás Rodríguez Peña, an Argentinean patriot.
It is full of green spaces. It is an ideal location for reading or sunbathing. Few meters away, the Pizzurno Palace is situated on Rodriguez Peña Street.

Vicente López Square
It is located among Montevideo, Juncal, Paraná and Arenales

It is surrounded by the streets of Montevideo, Juncal, Paraná and Arenales. In summer, people sunbathe or have lunch under leafy groves. The Sagrado Corazón Chapel is situated only few meters away.


Palacio de las Aguas Corrientes (Palace)
It is located on Córdoba Avenue Nº 1950
This edification was declared Historic National Monument in 1987. It was designed in 1883 by the Norwegian architect Olaf Boye and it was inaugurated in 1894.
It is the head office of The Aguas Argentinas Company. It is a monumental building that used to be a great water deposit which tried to repair the sanitary problems of the city. It has been a wonderful public work. The exterior is similar to a palace surrounded by gardens.

The façade is a spectacular work. It is covered by terracotta, ceramics and bricks of England whose shapes and colors reflect an immense richness. The cedar wooden doors are from Paraguay and they have bronze fittings. Inside, the decoration is composed by ceilings, vitraux, bluffs and colorful mosaics. This is one of the most original constructions of the region that form part of the city principal heritage.
