Luján is a city of Buenos Aires, very known as pilgrimage center; its Basilica is the most important spiritual place of Argentina. It is venue of an important historic museum, and recreational areas; it has agricultural potential, food and manufacturing industry too.
Walking Lujan streets is exciting, mainly for people who practice historic or religious tourism, since it represents a historic, architectural and religious richness. Many visitors and the congregation go to the pilgrimages.
How to arrive
The city has a Bus Station, located in Nuestra Señora de Luján Avenue and Almirante Brown. There, many buses companies depart and arrive with different destinations in Argentina and bordering countries.
Luján has a train station, situated in España Avenue and Lorenzo Casey, near Basilica of Luján and the historic zone. The Train Company of Buenos Aires (TBA) offers services from Buenos Aires, arriving in two hours to Luján.
The most cultural and quaint ceremony of Argentina is carried out the last Sunday of September. Other very crowded pilgrimage is for young people, the first Sunday of October; it is estimated that one million of young people go there. The Virgin’s day is celebrated in May.

Easter sunday. Judas burning
Attractive recreation of a typical celebration of “virreinal” epoch, year after year made, a colorful parade of "cabezudos" and the Judas burning (gigantic image), followed by fireworks and a great popular festival with autochthonous music and folkloric dances.
Virgen de Luján day
May 8 is the anniversary of “Santa Imágen de Nuestra Señora de Luján” coronation by León XIII pope. Is the main religious celebration in Luján, a huge number of peregrines, arrive from all over the world to visit the sanctuary to honor the virgin.
Horsebackriding pilgrimage to “Virgen de Lujan” sanctuary
The last Sunday of September takes place the most picturesque and original spiritual manifestation in the world: more than 7000 horseman accompanied by his families pilgrim once a year towards the sanctuary, since 1945, each year the number of persons increase, they come all over the country to participate and alo from other countries as: Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brasil, a truly expression of “gauchesca” devotion to “Virgen de Luján”.
Youth Pilgrimage on foot
The first October Sunday a diocesan procession towards” Virgen de Luján” sanctuary takes place; approximately 1.000.000 of the faithful Express their gratitude walking from different points of the country in a huge effort to visit and thank to “Virgen de Luján”.
Touristy attractions
National Basilica
The National Basilica, a place for touristy and religious tourism, has an ostentatious sanctuary that reflect and gothic art, hoarding the exquisiteness done by different field artists; it was built between 1887 and 1935.
The Virgin of Luján, located inside the Basilica, is a clay statue 38 centimeters tall, was molded in Brazil and then envied to Argentina in 1630. It looks like Immaculate of Murillo, has an inscription that says. “It is Virgin of Luján the founder of this town”
The zoo of Luján
It is located 4 Km. before arriving to Luján. There are antelopes, rheas and flamingos, lions, pumas, tigers, wild boars, monkeys, dromedaries; all of them live in natural places like their habitat.
It is a place to come into contact with the nature, and appreciate the animals and their peculiar behaviors that make laugh to visitors.
Luján River
The Lujan river is 130 Km over Luján level, flows in La Plata river. It is possible to take catamarans trips, by the river and go round the bank where the Florentino Ameghino Park is.
Ameghino Park
It is located behind the historic museum, in front of the river bank, is 3 hectares long and was built by Carlos Thays. It is the perfect place to rest, under a lush grove.
