City of La Quiaca, Argentina
It is located 289 kilometers from San Salvador of Jujuy and it limits with Bolivia. It is situated 3442 meters above the sea level.
Quiaca is a border city that keeps an ethnographic and cultural interest.
Its name comes from the Aymara word Quisca that means “sharp stone to shear livestock”. Once a year, in the second half of October, La Quiaca acquires significant color and life thanks to the celebration of the Mancafiesta or Party of the Pots.
How to get to La Quiaca
La Quiaca is located 290 kilometers away from San Salvador de Jujuy. The travel by bus takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. From Jujuy there are daily bus departures at different schedules.
By car you can get to La Quiaca by the No.9 National Route.

La Quiaca is scenery of the famous "Fiesta de las Ollas". The party custom has native roots, unique in the country. The city is visited by lots of people from Bolivia Andean plateau that brings pots, earthenware jars, clay plates and other objects of primitive pottery. Also arrives habitants of the Jujeña Andean plateau with hand woven llama wool, barracanes, picotes, chalonas, potatoes, chuño. The habitants of the nearby valleys brought dehydrate fruits, seeds, also ovejones hats and baskets. Along the fair the barter takes place. You also will find traditional food, music and dance in the traditional tents.
Tourist Attractions
Santa Victoria is a town located in the valley of the river with the same name, near the frontier with Bolivia. It was founded in 1803. It is situated 2352 meters above the sea level. In the church, the image of San Santiago is worshipped. Santa Victoria is an interesting true museum.
Santa Catalina is an old miner town located 67 kilometers away from La Quiaca. It is well-known as “Copper of Virtues and Traditions”. The old Church from the XVII century keeps the art of colonial imagery. Some places of interest to visit are the Regional Museum Epifanio Saravia and the River Catalina.
Casabindo is a traditional and a very old town which is situated 3500 meters above the sea level. It is plenty of adobe houses that date back from 1590. The church of the Puna was built in 1772. The internal part of the church is surrounded by a wall. There, the bullfighting of the Vincha is carried out on August 15.
Rinconada is a forgotten town. At the beginning of the century, the town was invaded by adventure seekers and searchers of gold. A pure gold piece, of 6 kg., was found.
Yavi is an old town situated 3600 meters above the sea level, only 15 kilometers away from La Quiaca, in the frontier with Bolivia. In this place, the old indigenous establishment that preserves a church from the XVII century is placed. The three bells of the church were built in 1779. Abundant archaeological testimonies exist in the surroundings. Some places of interest to visit are La Laguna Colorada, San Francisco Chapel (Yavi), Country property of the Marquis of Yavi and Tojo, and the Museum of the Antigal.
Volcán is the first town of the Gulch. It is situated 2.078 meters above the sea level and 40 kilometers from San Salvador, Jujuy.
Susques is a small population; it is the departmental head in the Puna of Jujuy. It is located 140 kilometers from Purmamarca. The most remarkable characteristic is the small church with straw roof. This church is one of the oldest of the northwest region. The Virgen de Belén is worshipped here.
