La Plata, Argentina

Distance from Capital Federal: 60 kilometers

La Plata, capital of Buenos Aires, is located to the southwest of Buenos Aires. It is a city with history, tradition and a strong European accent; not only its architectonic design has been praised, by the most famous town planning people; but also the magnificent buildings and innumerable open spaces.

It is known as “the city of diagonals”, because of the avenues constructions; there is an avenue each six streets and a park or a square in each intersection interconnected by diagonals. It is a green city plenty of trees streets like limes, bananas, jacarandas, oranges and chinaberries. The weather is warm and very humid, has an average yearly temperature of 17ºC.

How to arrive

If the visitor prefer, he would arrive by road, through National Route 36 or Provincial Route 11; by train from the Constitución Train Station.

New year

During New Year festivity takes place the Momos burning (traditional toys from Spain) in a picturesque celebration in La Plata city.

La Plata Anniversary (November)

La Plata city anniversary takes place in November; many cultural activities takes place as the traditional beneficent dinner organized by Fundación Florencio Pérez, music festivals, and the religious thanks giving mass.

Touristy attractions

Pereira Park

Pereira Park is the perfect place to recreation and environmental education. It is 600 hectares long, located in the south zone, and is the major the nature reserve of Palmar. It has open spaces for visiting and restricted ones that preserve flora and fauna.

Inside, people can practice activities in the open air like cycling, ridding, bird watching, camping and so on.

La República de los Niños (Theme Park for Children)

Another much visited place is the Theme Park “La República de los Niños”, located in Gonnet. The city includes all institutions like Parliament, Government House, Law Courts, Church, airport, restaurants, hotels, etc.

It was inaugurated in 1951, is 52 hectares that include geographical features and natural landscapes. It is composed by 35 buildings which show medieval, European, and Islamic architectural designs. They represent manufacturing, sportive commercial, educative and religious institutions of the country.

El Museo del Muñeco (international museum), one of the places of the park is very peculiar, has a collection of 2500 remains, donated by ambassadors and diplomats. The most important ones are which belonged to chancay, culture of Peru done 600 years ago.

Astronomic Observatory

The space observatory forms part of the Department of Astronomical and Geophysics Sciences of La Plata University. It is an important researching center.
It is situated between gardens and forest, forms part of an architectural complex of vast sizes, includes the main building for management, administration, library and other premises.
There are several domes for observation; the major one was equipped with an 83-centimetres-telescope and a magnetic tunnel.

The Cathedral

The cathedral is in front of Moreno square, is the biggest neo gothic temple of

South America, has seven French and German vitraux. It is possible to look around the crypt plenty of legends, a modern transparent elevator that let show the city and a subterranean museum with snack bar.
