Belgrano Neighborhood, Buenos Aires city, Argentina
Belgrano, traditional neighborhood of Buenos Aires city, long ago it was the capital, is one of the most important commercial centers in the city. It characterizes by having big parks, and streets plenty of trees, is located 10 Km away from Mayo square.
Nowadays, Belgrano is middle - upper class, residential and distinguished, its name commemorates to Manuel Belgrano, Independence war fighter and the Argentinean flag creator.
Belgrano, since its origin was a residential and institutional, the inhabitants belonged to a social group united to ruling class and erudites of Buenos Aires, that’s why the constructions are generally big houses of that epoch.
The street has shopping centers, restaurants, architectonic jewels and large green areas. The nerve centre in Belgrano is the crossroads of Juramento and Cabildo avenues. There are many buses and the underground line D in Juramento station.
Belgrano is divided in 3 zones:
Belgrano C
Belgrano C is situated in the older village, nowadays it is a commercial zone, and its name comes from the train station which belonged to “Ferrocarril Central Argentino”.
The architecture of this zone is formed by high buildings, predominating fifteen-storey buildings.
Among the tourist attractions, we can mention the following: Manuel Belgrano Square, the church of Concepcion known as La Redonda, the crafts fair in the square every weekend, the “Barrancas de Belgrano”, traditional porteño avenue.
Residential zone: Belgrano R
It is situated to the west of Cabildo Avenue, and the commercial area, residential upper class zone. The architecture is formed by expensive houses, big houses and old wooded streets that conserve its cobbles, it is very common the contrast between old and modern buildings making it a peculiar porteño landscape, the main streets are La Pampa, Melián and Forest avenue.
Bajo Belgrano
It covers from Barrancas de Belgrano to La Plata river, is one of the nearest zones to the river and the racetrack.
In the architecture, the flat and old houses, the construction of Cantilo Avenue and the university campus, next to the river predominate. Nowadays, there are houses and prestigious departments among the comfortable buildings which were built some years ago.
PLACES TO VISIT IN BELGRANO
* La Inmaculada Concepción Church (1878)
Address: Juramento avenue nearly Cabildo corner.
It is known as “La Redonda” or also called “La Iglesia Redonda” because of its circular floor, is located in Juramento and Vuelta de Obligada.
* La Recova
This peculiar place is a traditional bar in Buenos Aires city visited for drinking a coffee, especially on Sundays, is located close to the church of Concepcion.
* Manuel Belgrano Main Square
Main Square of Belgrano neighborhood. Surroundings, there are some historic heritages of Belgrano. There is a crafts fair in front of Enrique Larreta museum every weekend.
* Sarmiento Historic Museum

Schedule: Monday to Friday from 14 to 19hrs and Sundays from 15 to 19hrs.
It was founded in the fiftieth death anniversary of the father of the country, on July 28 1938. Long ago it was the former municipality, was the seat of National Government in 1880, work of Buschiazzo architect. It is used as museum in honor to Domingo Faustino Sarmiento ex-president.
* "Enrique Larreta" Spanish Art Museum
Address: Juramento Avenue 2291 Telephone:4783-2640
Schedule: Wednesday to Monday from 14 to 20 hs.
Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from15 to 20 hrs
The Enrique Larreta Spanish Art Museum was inaugurated in 1962, it is located in the center of the neighborhood, has a furniture collection and Spanish art from XVI to XVIII century.
* Manuel Mujica Lainez House
Address: 2.150 from O'Higgins Street – Capital Federal
Manuek Mujica Lainez, Argentinean writer (1910-1984), lived in this house. It is few steps away from Barrancas.
* French Bank- Libero Badii Museum
Address: The corner of 11 de Septiembre and Echeverría
Schedule: Tuesday to Friday from 10 to 18 hrs.
Saturdays and Sundays from 15 to 19 hrs
It is located in the house of Alsina-Atucha, the founder family, has an important collection of Libero Badii painter and sculptor. Nowadays, it belongs to French Bank.
* Casa de Rogelio Yrurtiaz Museum
Address: O'Higgins 2390 (and Blanco Encalada)

Schedule: Tuesday to Friday from 13 to 19 hs.
A baroque Spanish house, where Rogelio Yururtiaz, Argentinean sculptor lived. The big house was donated by his wife and then was fitted out as museum in 1949. It exhibits the works of Rogelio Yrirtia and of Argentinean and foreign painters, bought by the sculptor.
* Barrancas de Belgrano
Address: Juramento Avenue and 11 de Septiembre Street
The Barrancas de Belgrano, park with four hectares of natural drops, is one of the most important attractions of the neighborhood. It was remodeled by Carlos Thays; nowadays, the Barrancas, a small square, a grove and a natural viewpoint stand out.
* Statue of Liberty
In Barrancas de Belgrano Park, a replica of the Statue of Liberty is located, was designed by Bertholdi, acquired by the municipality of France.
* Stadium of River Plate Athletic Club
It is well-known as “the Monumental”. It was officially inaugurated on May 1938, there; the Worldwide Football Championship of 1978 was carried out.
